Up and out early today as we have a trek ahead. The day is overcast but warm and Gene says we have to get farther north where it is cooler. Great three days with the Cuz'ns and they will meet us at Moosehead lake in two weeks.
We make pretty good time in spite of obligatory stops at the New Hampshire State Liquor store for cheap booze and the Maine welcome center for much literature. I think we are supplied now.
Jane had mentioned an article in the NY Times someone sent her about a lobster roll eatery in Wiscasset called Red's Eats, which has been in business since 1938 and where people stand in line for hours, that snarls traffic due to its popularity and that is where we turn off route 1 to head to Boothbay. Sure enough about three miles out, traffic begins to crawl. We are only about 12 miles from our destination but at 8-10 mph, this could take an hour. Wiscasset is a very picturesque town and upon arrival we spot the troublemaker, a tiny hot dog stand looking place right on the corner of the highway and the bridge going over the bay. And no parking so the cars just stop and hold everyone up. Traffic is backed up in both directions. The Times article said there is a proposal to build a by-pass around the restaurant so as to stop the bottleneck.
I have done a lot of research in picking our stay for the next four days but still am apprehensive that it will be acceptable. Ya'll, I have hit it out of the ballpark! We could be in the north Maine woods. The site is wooded on three sides, ferns, firs, rocks. Neat as a pin, our own little garbage can at the roadside with a picket fence around it. Full of friendly folk walking around. Down the hill there is a river, great view. You can rent a canoe if you wish. I will post photos tomorrow, it was late and overcast today so the light was not good.
We had picked up seasoned chicken at Stew Leonards which we baked on the picnic table in the handy dandy toaster oven. Came out great. We also got half a fresh berry pie there. After dinner we headed to the rec hall for a two hour concert. There was a man and his keyboard and it was amazing. This guy could do anybody and did. Eagles, Neil Diamond, Merle Haggard, BeeGees, Billy Joel, etc. Sometimes people got up and danced to his more rousing numbers. There were about 50 people and a dog and the dog would bark once at the end of a song. So funny!
The 6 days we took to get here have gone by in a flash. But finally we are here and so here we go, livin' the dream. Stay tuned.
