Fantastic Collection

Heading out on Saturday, Gene becomes the race horse that can smell the finish line and proposes that we skip our destination tonight and do an all out dash to my cousin's house near Danbury, CT. It is fine with them so off we go. Continuing through the lovely Shenendoah Valley, a hair of West Virgina and into Pennsylvania. I can tell as soon as we get into Pennsylvania as the character of the farms change. The houses are more straight up, some are stone, the barns have stone foundations, and some of them are absolutley HUGE. The terrain gets more rocky and we climb into mountains. Most of the time the view is obscured, then around a curve and WOW!!...a vista that is unbelieable as we are higher than yesterday and can see several ridge lines disappearing into the haze. The temperature is never over 81. When we get to CT, we will have been in 10 states in three days. Not too bad, we arrive at 6:30 after ten hours on the road. Of course, the old joints scream when we try to go from sitting to upright ambulating again.
Cousin Jane and Roy live in an affluent and picturesque area. The house sits on a hill overlooking a high end horse farm that has gorgeous shingled buildings and is landscaped like the most expensive gardens one has ever seen. The horses are rather handsome too. On a walk this morning I saw two things I have never seen: a totally white squirrel and a horse on a treadmill.
Jane and Roy are collectors. He collects Griswold cast iron cookware. There is so much of it in the house that we are amazed that the structure can hold the weight. It is not just to look at, they also use it and this morning we had square eggs cooked in a little pan designed to make it the exact size of a piece of toast. Jane's primary collection is coffee grinders and they line the top of the kitchen cabinets. But Jane collects just about everything and if you are into antiques, as I am there are constantly "ah ha" moments as you notice things that you have only read about. The laundry room is filled with laundry related antiques and so forth. And two baskets of old crocheted miniature dresses whose use escapes me, but they are totally charming. In our bedroom there is a collection of sewing related articles on the antique sewing machine. On the dresser are an old curling iron and the device used to heat it which seems to have held heated water. Also many antique eyeglasses and a porcelin jar advertising the toothpaste it once held. The coffee table in the den is a wood clad copper bathtub covered with glass. It usually takes someone awhile to notice what it is. The clue is that the top is decorated with antique brass soap dishes. Some designed to sit beside a sink and some to hang on a bathrub rim. Jane's retirement hobby is holding estate sales for people. I am very tempted to move up here to help with this endeavor. Our bedroom is also decorated with photos of my beloved grandparents in their youth, and their parents. The furniture is Eastlake Victorian.
We will head out in a bit on some adventure. Will tell you about it later.
